Learn more about what makes each special, then make your way to your local Bow Tie to pick your favorite movies for the upcoming Academy Awards.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Based on the real-life friendship between children’s television personality Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod, this movie is a must-see for anyone who loved to watch Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Tom Hanks stars in this masterpiece, which has been well-received by both critics and the general public.

Bombshell

This star-studded cast includes Margot Robbie, Charlize Theron, and Nicole Kidman, among others. Thanks to these talented actresses, Bombshell is sure to be a gripping drama about the female Fox News employees who challenged a toxic culture and helped bring down Roger Ailes. A December 20th release date will make it one of the last big hits from 2019.

Ford v Ferrari

Based on a true story, Ford v Ferrari uncovers the near impossible journey of Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles as they searched for a way to compete against Ferrari’s reigning supercars in France’s Le Mans race. Matt Damon and Christian Bale team up for two unforgettable performances, and with a budget just under $100 million, we’re betting on the action taking the front seat.

Joker

Director Todd Phillips has created a smash hit that can be enjoyed independently from the rest of the DC universe. Alongside appearances from Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, and Marc Maron, Joaquin Phoenix stars as a failed comedian who descends into madness. Joker has continued to reign over the box office and has won the praise of critics and comic book fans alike.

Little Women

The newest adaption of Louisa May Alcott’s classic story has star power coming from all sides. The cast includes favorites such as Emma Watson, Meryl Streep, Timothee Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan, all guided by the great Greta Gerwig, best known for her recent directorial debut of Lady Bird. With 5 Academy Award nominations already under her belt, we are expecting similar accolades for Little Women.

Waves

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross created an unsettling soundtrack that works alongside a cast of talented actors and actresses to drive this drama. Tragic circumstances force a suburban family to navigate grief and grievances as they seek the beauty in life. Prepare to confront your own emotions as you watch this universally acclaimed movie.

Motherless Brooklyn

Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Leslie Mann, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Willem Defoe and Alex Baldwin leave it all on the table in this movie about a detective in 1950s New York. Directed by Edward Norton, Motherless Brooklyn follows a private detective with Tourette’s syndrome as he tries to solve the murder of his only friend.

A Hidden Life

A deeply religious Austrian farmer refuses to join the Nazis during World War II, making himself an unsung hero and war prisoner at the same time. This historical drama has received positive reviews from both critics and the general public. Watch it to see the final performances of both Michael Nyqvist and Bruno Ganz.
